BEST MILWAUKEE RAP 2023

by

Rap city of the year.

Art by Tyler Farmer.

MANO: I’ll keep it brief. Milwaukee rap has been in a beautiful place for years. Despite rampant tragedy, over-policing and lack of institutional support, these artists, managers, promoters, DJs and videographers have persevered via sheer resilience and inventiveness. This is a scene of jittery claps and zany footwork that existed in its own isolated bubble for over a decade and is now influencing culture at large. A handful of locals have covered the music for years; a few more of us became obsessives in the last few. Here, our collective and individual tastes are presented in around 200 songs that defined the year in Milwaukee rap. PLAYLIST.

Some numbers:

The four artists that made it onto eight of nine ballots were Mariboy Mula Mar, SME Taxfree, Joe Pablo and AyooLii.

The song with the most votes was Munch Lauren & Mula Mar – “Shake It” (5).

The song with the second most votes was Chicken P – “Still Bout It Bout It” (4).

The songs with the third most votes were MarijuanaXO/Joe Pablo – “No Mentions,” Lilqua 50/Naz Turnt/Zavy 50 – “Potrexx,” Mariboy Mula Mar/SME Taxfree/Dai Ballin/Big Steff – “How Im Feelin” and Carvie P/STEVETHESTONER – “Like Woah” (3).

Five of the nine voters picked an AyooLii song as their Milwaukee rap song of their year.
