These days, I don’t like throwing parties. Maybe I’m just #27AndWashed, but I also think it has to do with the fact that they can be a lot of work, and you shouldn’t have to work hard to have fun! (All the hours that went into those Living Gallery events last year…don’t get me started.) These days, I’d rather just kick it at the crib, invite a few people over, maybe watch a movie (damn I’m definitely washed).
Most magazines in New York exist because people who party need a thing for their parties to be about. I hate this phenomenon, so I was totally content with letting the magazine do its thing in the wild, no bells or whistles. Until a few weeks ago, when Millan hit the groupchat:
Thus it was written. Millan and I made it clear, however, that we would operate under our Newly Washed Rules: Keep it simple, with as little work and setup as possible. Molasses is a tight space (people tend to pass out in there when it gets crowded) so we decided it’d be more of a pop-up store than a party party. Sell magazines off the phone card reader, get people flowing in and out. In one corner, the wonderful keyboardist Vittorio played a solo set. And in the other, we spread our stickers across a table, had a few magazines for people’s perusal, a couple boxes of product, and that was it! We sold a bunch of mags, a lotta legends came through, and the beer and wine flowed all night thanks to Matt, who was so locked in behind the bar he was wearing just a tank top despite the 20 degree weather. After it died down, most of the stragglers went to the bar Mad Tropical, as we did two years ago after the very first Town Hall.
We’ve still got some mags left on the online store, but consider this your low stock warning! Tryna get it in a few more brick-and-mortar stores including one place in D.C. and a couple spots in Manhattan, will keep you posted on that. The team might put up some of the Issue 1 articles digitally on the blog, but I do kind of love the exclusive vibe, it makes the magazines feel much more like books full of secrets. That said, are there any stories from Issue 1 you’d really wanna read / have on the net for archival reasons? Let us know!
